April Challenge - Classic Black & White photography - Discussion

Black and white photography doesn't rely on it's colours, more so on close attention to composition, lighting, perspective and the context in which it is shot.

So April's challenge is to submit something that's been thought through in black & white.
Some sites for a bit of inspiration:

Shots must be taken between now and the end of April.

what happened to the $100 prize from the 'sponsor' of this fine competition that was in the original post earlier today?

or was that a hilarious april fool by some jolly prankster?
 
Would it be possible to have a black and white photo, but a bit more contemporary.

So for example a little bit like this 3d effect

Would it be better as a learning tool to shoot B&W in camera or converting to B&W in Post production, i'd rather progress my DSLR skills than my post production ones but wondering what others think?

You could shoot in RAW and large jpeg and shoot in B&W. Only the jpeg will be B&W and you still have a RAW colour file if you want to convert it with PP.
 
I read somewhere recently (cant think where like, i read that much shite). But when learning it can help you concentrate on composition, lighting and 'getting it right in camera' not having to worry about colour. The lack of post production is particularly appealing, when I just snap away 16gigs at a time.

Composition is what im struggling with mostly at the minute though.

I always shoot RAW like and glad i do as i've reedited some files recently and made a far better job of them to what i was doing this time last yr!

So if shooting in RAW + JPEG you get standard ready processed b&W image and the color info still available in the RAW file to adjust/tweak in PP if needed?

Sounds ideal????

The article sounded double dutch to me too, but as I've had a glass of wine I thought I'd read it again tomorrow. :confused:
 
Black & white isn't just an absence of colours. It's about the tones and variations of the black through to white.

In the likes of lightroom over what captured colour becomes what shade of grey, meaning you can emphasise regions etc.

Black and white conversion is the last thing I would let my camera do automatically

I'm trying to emulate true b+w tography by using in camera processing & jpg, but it isn't happening. Given up, it's clearly only really achievable in film.

I'm struggling to see the tones and textures because all I'm seeing is colour and lighting.. ages left in the month to keep practicing though.

really? i often shoot in black and white, especially if im down london and discretely shooting street folk....dunno why really, i just do.

have a look at how you can change what bits are black and white using the lightroom conversion, you can alter how say all the reds in your image appear, the blues etc. Getting a properly developed digital B&W is a proper art

not really. What you do in lightroom changing the mix etc is just like using colour filters on an enlarger to produce the final print. Granted, composing a shot to produce a good B&W, you need a good mix of contrasts, and textures in your composition - and this comes with time.
