RIP Poledancer - Podgy

We first heard of the sad news as we got off our coach at Peterborough on Saturday. The lads who travel with our branch (Sedgefield) who knew Podgy were devastated by the news. He was an awesome guy who would do anything for anyone. He was a face everyone recognised home and away. On behalf of the Sedgefield Sunderland Supporters Branch I would like to offer our deepest condolences to George's family and close friends. He will be sadly missed by all at SAFC.

RIP MY FELLOW MACKEM.

Contacted him on this site about 3 years ago to make a SAFC Willington Flag for me to take to Amsterdam, bit apprehensive before I went up to pick it up as seen some of his posting but he and his Wife were really nice and I was blown away with what they made for me. I can honestly say in over 45 years of buying Sunderland stuff it’s the best value and purchase I have ever made.
So sad, thoughts go out to his Wife, Family and Friends RIP

This one mate?
Outside a pub in Monchengladbach, this year?

Everone having ran for cover, from an almighty downpour at the time like

George was the same age as me, first met him at Leyton Orient way back in the mid 70's. We were both just young'uns, only about 16 / 17 at the time.
It was after the game and we were going into the tube station to get back into central London. George and a few others were coming out as we went in, and he came over and warned us not to go in, as a load of West Ham fans were waiting on the platform. We jumped on a bus instead and joined the tube further down the line.
Met him many, many times since that day, and enjoyed a pint and a bit craic with him, at games all over the country. Gutted that he is no longer with us,
Sunderland AFC has lost one of its best.

RIP Podge mate.

I can't place him tbh although i must have bumped into him over the years.
i remember that incident at Orient as well as we got told and done exactly the same maybe 1974/1975 at a guess (i would have been 17)

RIP

Just had me driving lesson and me instructor knew him well years ago. Can't believe what happened like.

I got an email off him, a couple of weeks before the trip.
He had been planning sorting a bus out for Dusseldorf-BMG, the day of the game.
Told me he had to cancel the bus, due to the illness (then just illness) of an aunt (IIRC, an aunt, apologies to anyone if wrong) who travelled to a few games with him. He was well pissed-off about cancelling the bus, but seemed to care a lot for this woman, and was more worried about her.

I Didn't know anything more as he didn't get to Germany, I don't think.
Now I realise why possibly he didn't turn up at all.
Sadly I haven't seen him since, which is playing on my mind now. Must be about a year or more now, since I've seen him.

He was supposed to be staying at our digs in Dusseldorf then travel with us to Hameln where we were going to stay at his place after the match. He had to drop out late on cos of his auntie (who I thought he said had died) so we took on the flat in Hameln and stayed there.
Was talking to him at the England v India one dayer in September and he seemed ok but did say the bereavement had hit him hard.
Really gutted its come to this. RIP Podge.

Never knew him personally but always looked out for his flags.
RIP George you certainly left your mark in a lot of people hearts.

Aye, at the time I don't think anybody realised how much it had affected him.
I also didn't realise he was actually planning to stop in your digs in dusseldorf, mind.

We would have had the pleasure of his company outside 'The Off Licence' every night :-D
Slumming-It with 'Us Tramps'. :-D

I am moved by the people that did not even know him commenting, what a great "FUKIN" place this is.

R.I.P MR George Love you x

I'm fairly sure it was his sister who has been ill and not his aunty.

That bastard cancer I think.

Apologies if wrong.

You could be right.
But for some strange reason, I had 'auntie' fixed in me mind.
I actually went back through my emails, before i posted the story.
To june and the run-up to the friendly tour.
But i must have deleted that one, although there was other ones from him still stored.

News like this is always terrible, even when you don't know someone personally. Even on the board I'm pretty sure the only time we interacted was when he kicked off with me for posting something derogatory about bloody Sean Thornton  RIP lad.

I've been thinking what to write since Sunday morning after I was told en route to Peterborough and to be honest I still don't know.

Rest In Peace Podge and thanks for some great times and memories at the match, going to the match or home from the match. Away days wont be the same without you.

A great bloke who we should all be honoured to say was one of us.
