Not sure if this is the best time to start a thread like this but it's something that needs to be asked. In the last two years I've had 3 mates 'give up the fight' against this (must be my shite patter), and in each case i never knew they were suffering from it.
What i want/need to know is, if i did know what could i do to help them, and what signs should i look out for to realise my mates may have depression?
Each time I've been left wondering..'If only I'd known..' but then start thinking 'even if I'd known, what could i do..?'
I'm sure there are websites out there explaining it but there's nothing better than advice from someone with personal experience
Mods, if you think this thread is 'too soon' please delete it, I'll understand

Some people hide it very well.

From the little I know about it, I'd say there's a few signs that people probably don't often associate with depression, but can be signs that someone is suffering from it.

Stuff like, them saying they're bored all the time. Or them feeling the need to be with people all the time - not being able to stand their own company.

Best advice I'd say is to try to get them to talk about it with you or someone else. Think talking is the only real thing that helps tbh.

i get it, i use a technique i discovered in prison when i was younger, a kind of transcendental meditation if you will, i'll take myself off somewhere the trick is to imagine the minutest detail, like in golf you dont aim for a certain tree in the distance you aim for a leaf on a branch, really focus and imagine every tiny detail
works for me

My friends Dad has it really bad atm, on 40mg of prozac i think. Hasn't left the house since Xmas, if he goes outside he starts shaking and sweating. Just sits and stares into nothing half the day... First time he's been off work in 8 years too. Hard seeing what it's doing to him...

Very little as far as I am aware. They need to go to the doctor/social services and get proper professional help.

the thing is though some people can suffer it and give off no signals whatsoever, you cant really intervene with some people depending on how they act when theyre depressed
the start of last year i was bad with it, i think it was pretty obvious to people but i know id never be able to take my own life, id been through it before when i was 17, and i almost lost a family member last year ( tried to hang herself ) and i know its not the answer
i guess it just depends on how the person sufferring seems when youre with them, you cant be thinkign " what if " though, at all, even though you do havbe shite patter mate i doubt thats the reason ;)
if youre concerned about a mate id suggest spending time with them and keeping them busy so theyve got something to focus on, its worse being bored and then drinking through it, my mates are all f***ing amazing so they looked after me in shitty times and id do the same no problem though i hope i never need to

Not really mate, its an illness

everyone gets low - some lower then others admittedly - but being depressed is part of the human condition, I'm abit low my self atm after my holiday break and post-christmas bank account.

perhaps that the difference.. i know why I'm low and it will pass because of that. I knew a lass who had no idea why she cried, she's sorted now though.

I haven't so that's not true at all. Not to say it isn't waiting round the next corner mind.

no but you have an inclination to get depressed, is what I mean. It's no different to those who have been diagnosed with depression.

Got it bad a few years back when things went tits up for me its a horrible feeling tried taking my life once put myself in hospital, luckily i got out of it in the end with a lot of help.

had moments where i just lost the plot would smash the house up for no reason, push people away, its a hard battle that many people suffer in silence.

Ive had it for a number of years now and its just there everytime you wake up, nothing you can do about it. The medication is the only thing that helps keep me focused and clear-headed. Your just stuck with it, but I accept it and get on with it and try to be as happy as i can
