A lot of good people have died in Afganistan and they don't get this sort of attention, he was not killed he hung himself. Lets not go overboard he was a footballer at the end of the day not mother Theresa...professional mourners...

it's a football message board you may be better off posting this here or here

If that's the way you feel then that's your opinion. Perhaps this isn't the best thread to write it on. Start a new one and get a debate going if that's what you want to achieve.

did i miss the twitter-storm in a teacup? was it barton's comment re: suicide being the ultimate selfish act that upset people?

Yep, and a few people took exception to it - the timing mainly I suspect. Personally, my issue was that it was way too soon for a public figure to dribbling his psuedo-intellectual moralising about a fellow football man who was not long dead.

Instead of saying nowt, or apologising for any unintentional offence caused, he instead went on the attack, calling everyone who was upset about it idiots. The papers reported his belligerence of it today - just reported it mind, they didn't add any editorial - and he's went mental about it. Acting the victim, trying to draw as much attention to himself as he can.

Barton is so contrived and desperate to make all and sundry think he's super intelligent. We all get it - you're not the stereotypical footballer. Neither was Gary Speed. Barton could do well to look at the massive outpouring over Speed and question whether he would get the same?

i saw his reposte this afternoon but didnt know what it refered too... i guess i can see your point of view about the timing rather than the content being the issue. i guess its not in his nature to 'let it lie' though...

i assume twitter must be every press officers worst nitemare!

Just found out his wife was the one who found him, I just can't feel sympathy for him. Leaving behind two kids and a wife and then his wife finding him hanging is inexcusable.

What if in his mind he thought he was doing them a favour ending his own life? You just can't comprehend it man. Neither can I, thank God, or maybe we'd not be here either...

Just a little story about Gary Speed.

A mate of mine(who's sadly dead now) was a Leeds fan and his favourite player ever at Leeds was Gary Speed - some going considering the Revie era. He had got to meet him a few times through charity and community work.

Back in 1997 he wrote to Gary c/o Everton FC asking if he had anything that he could auction for a charity he was involved with at the time.

He really wasn't too sure if he'd get a reply. But Gary remembered him and arranged for loads of stuff to be auctioned.

My mate had a Sunderland address. It was the week before the final game at Roker Park. Gary told him to wait for him getting off the Everton bus and he would get an address off him and ensure that the stuff was there the next week.

He duly did this. I was standing there with him as Gary took down the address in a notepad  Even footballers didn't all have mobiles in 1997.

He then asked us both if we had tickets for the game. Well I did, but my mate wasn't particularly arsed.

Gary then presented us with two tickets and a pass for the players' lounge afterwards.

It was all because of Gary Speed that I got to meet John Mullin

Seriously though, what a really smashing lad he was. I've not really given it much thought in the last 10 years or so and only remembered about it the day after he died.

RIP Gary. I wish you had played for us.

Ugh. Horrendous.

Haven't been reading papers or anything over last week or so, has any possible reasons why he hung himself came out?

Its a great shame and he might have been a great man but to cowardly commit suicide and leave behind his sons and wife in the manner he has questions how much of a great man he actually was.

Or equally, he may have simply had an undiagnosed mental illness.

To take your own life possibly knowing that your wife or, god forbid, one of your children may find you is clearly not the work of a sound mind.

To the other posters referring to his apparent cowardice, I feel you are massively over simplifying the situation.

As AB22 has already mentioned, have a look at some of the painfully honest and personal posts on this thread then go away and have a think.

His inquest was today. Said on sky news hordes of media were present. f***ing scum can't they leave the bloke in peace our press are a disgrace

Maybe they are, but there's no denying that they (his family) themselves may well end up with just as many demons a he had, purely down to the way he has ended things.

It's all so tragic, for him and for them, whatever his reasons were.

I know where you are coming from and I agree but rightly or wrongly there is a lot of interest and intrigue including confusion as to why he did this. No need for photographs to be taken like or even interviews at this stage but they will be there unfortunately as long as there is interest

Really not sure about the selfish angle. Not only do you not know the circumstances, you can never understand someone else's perspective. Trying to impose your own perspecitve could easily be construed as more selfish.

Please take it from someone who er, knows someone who suffers bipolar and has been very very close to the point that suicide that it is no act of cowardice but sometimes the conclusion to a mental illness. Just remember GS kindly.

I'm not assuming this is why he did what he did
