Dennis Tueart 1st December 2011
As many of you will have seen by now (on the branch message board at www.readytogo.net/manchester-branch ), our first and last branch ‘do’ of 2011 will be held at the Sapphire Suite, Edgeley Park, Stockport (Cheadle Road End Stand) on Thursday December 1st (7.45) when our principal guest will be former SAFC, Man City and England star Dennis Tueart, who will be promoting his new autobiography, My Football Journey.
Dennis is the first of Sunderland’s 1973 legends to bring out a book and, as anyone who heard him speak at previous branch meetings at the now demolished Acton Court Hotel a few years ago and at the Hesketh in Cheadle Hulme (in 1997!) will be well aware, he is first-class speaker with opinions that demand respect because of his long career in the game as a player, pundit, and ex-Man City director.
His account of the 1973 FA Cup fairytale makes fascinating reading as does his critique of Bob Stokoe’s management style. There’s lots of behind-the-scenes tales of his days as a player at Roker Park and Maine Road and anecdotes about how he fell out with iconic City legends Francis Lee and Rodney Marsh – who he blames for ruining Micky Horswill’s City career.
In a glittering playing career, Dennis played with some of the greatest stars in the game in the 70’s and 80’s including Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto when he played for New York Cosmos and also met pop icons such as Mick Jagger and Rod Stewart, so there will be plenty of good football banter when Dennis comes to County!
Tickets for what promises to be a brilliant night will be on sale on the branch coach to the Fulham and Wigan games in November at just £3 for members and £4 for non-members and it will be a case of first come, first served. Tickets are also available direct from Dave Bowman (See contacts page)
Dennis’s book will be on sale on the night at the specially reduced price of £15 (RRP £18.99) and with all the royalties going to the famous Christie Hospital in Manchester, My Football Journey is for a very good cause and will be the ideal Christmas present for Sunderland and City fans alike. So if your friend, neighbour or work colleague is a City supporter bring him or her along to enjoy the craic!
