It was a new look Sunderland side that took to the field yesterday, with typical Sunderland tendencies. Chances came and went and we were then punished by a split second lack of concentration at the back. However, the performance was better than the stuff that has been served up in the past, which is encouraging.
Dick Advocaat over the summer called for quality over quantity, the quality started to show in the chances that were created and the way we limited Spurs to one real chance, which unfortunately one that was taken.
During his post match interview Advocaat was upbeat despite the late suckerpunch. Advocaat said: “I think the crowd liked the way we play, it’s a really attractive way of playing.
“We did not get the points we deserved, but then with all respect to Spurs, they’ve got a really good side.
“But I think one point for us would have been a fair result.
“It’s a disappointing result, although not the way we played. You could see a big difference to the approach of the game from our team.
Without stating the obvious, we desperately need a win to kick start a season that needs a spark after five games. Our slow starts have been common for too long. Bournemouth on Saturday, is a game where we expect a typical Sunderland performance in a game that really we should be winning. With a new look to the team, it could be where we finally shake off that “typical Sunderland” tag and comfortably win the game.
Time will tell.
