Another new season is meant to bring hope and expectation that the last season, was the last in a long cycle of disappointed seasons.
That hope and expectation lasted all of 11 minutes after Jamie Vardy opened the scoring. By 25 minutes, we were looking at another Southampton scenario after another art in self destruction.
Although, SAFC have managed to recruit 5 new faces, the problems are still there to see. No bite in midfield, defence all over the shop, although we managed to score twice, we are still desperate for attacking quality.
Unlike Gus Poyet, Dick Advocaat has gone about the transfer business done so far with maturity and maintaining his self respect. However, he admits he needs more quality.
“You cannot buy only players for £1m, £2m or £3m.” However, Advocaat refused to blame Ellis Short. “But that was not a mistake because the president is doing everything to help the team.”
Advocaat said he was “scared” after watching his team capitulate.
“It’s not only the result which scares me a little bit, but the way we played, especially in the first half. We still know what we have to do, we still have to change some things.”
Although, you could say I am clutching at straws, this hopefully is our watershed moment after one game of the season. I am hoping Ellis Short has realised that we need to recruit some real quality
How many times has this been said over the years? Things need to change. Quickly.
