Unless you have been on holiday on another planet, you will know by now that Steve Bruce is our new manager and his backroom team of Eric Black, Nigel Spink and Keith Bertschin will also be joining the club.
Looking at our poll, it would appear I am in the minority group but I have to say I personally am a little underwhelmed by this appointment.
Naturally I wish him well and I hope we go on to better things but in the familiar way we have had Niall talking things up and then bringing in someone who doesn’t exactly set the world alight, not for me anyway.
Is he a capable manager? Yes I think he is both capable and improving.
Is he likely to take us to the top echelon? Sadly I don’t think he is. However, for next season, if he can steer us to where Wigan are now I won’t be complaining. Beyond that, we will have to wait and see.
Steve Bruce has never denied being a Mag – personally that doesn’t bother me, he always seems to have had respect for SAFC and I also have no doubt that he is a professional and will do his best for us (the reported £3 million/year salary will I am sure dampen the pain for him). My only concern here is that if and when we do go through a bad run there will be an element of the crowd who won’t forgive his origins. Let us hope that is minimal and doesn’t get to him or the players.
Welcome to the club Steve and good luck.
