Sunderland striker goes Down Under

April 16, 2005 by rtg

Sunderland striker Neil Teggart has signed for Australian side Perth Glory, in Australia’s Hyundai A-League.

Teggsy, 20, signed for Sunderland in July 2003 but his appearances have been limited to the reserves where he’s scored 18 times in 24 outings; he spent three months on loan at Darlington in 2004 and at a brief spell at Scunthorpe earlier this year.

He also played at U17, U19 and U21 levels for Northern Ireland, netting 9 from 15 appearances.

Perth Glory manager and former Liverpool star Steve McMahon told Glory’s official website, “Neil is a very up-and-coming young prospect but obviously he still has a lot to learn. He had a number of issues at Sunderland and for personal reasons returned to Northern Ireland, but now he’s fully focused and ready to return to top class football.”

“His record speaks for itself,” continued McMahon, “but he is more than a goal scorer with his physique and, hopefully, now he has matured as a person, he will mature as a player”.
