Recent tabloid reports have linked Sunderland with possible moves for a defender and goalkeeper.
Stoke city captain Clive Clarke, who celebrated his 25th birthday this week, is set to sign for SAFC for £400,000 if the Sunday People newspaper is to be believed. Another Irishman, Clarke is a left-sided player who City say can play in central defence or midfield.
McCarthy is also said to be keeping an eye on Paul Given, the younger brother of Newcastle keeper Shay. Given had a week’s trial with Sunderland early in the new year, but the gaffer has played down reports that the young Irishman could be set to sign.
“We had Paul over to have a closer look at him. He was with us for a week but has now returned home.
“There’s nothing at all happening in terms of him moving here, but we will keep our eye on him.”
