Welsh winger to sign on Monday

November 20, 2004 by rtg

Mick McCarthy has confirmed that he hopes to complete the signing of a new winger on Monday.

Stockport County’s Andy Welsh, 21, has been training with the Lads and McCarthy has confirmed it’s pretty much a done deal that his next match will be in red and white.

The gaffer told Radio Newcastle, “”We have agreed a deal with Stockport and Andy will join us. I saw a lot of him last season and he has a lot of potential. He is a left-sider and a good footballer.

“We were on the lookout for a left-sided player and we looked at various people such as Michael McIndoe at Doncaster before Ian Evans saw Andy.

“I think he is someone who can get better and improve and I am looking forward to working with him.

“Having seen him play, he has got a lot of ability. He can come inside and play off the frontmen and get behind people.”
