Piper happy with comeback

November 11, 2004 by rtg

Man U reserves 4, Sunderland reserves 1 (Wanless)

Matt Piper spoke of how pleased he was to play for Sunderland again tonight, after making another comeback from major injury.

Piper played the final 25 minutes of Sunderland’s away reserves match against Man Utd tonight; however the end result was less pleasing – a 4-1 defeat.

Mick McCarthy travelled with Kevin Richardson’s side to Altrincham to see Piper’s comeback for himself, ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Leicester.

Piper said, “Everything has gone to plan. I came on for 25 minutes, got a couple of crosses in and felt good, I’m pleased with it.

“It’s good to be involved in a game again and I’ll play for a bit longer next time. My fitness needs a bit of work but it’s an important step for me.”

Sunderland were 4-0 down in tonight’s match, but Jack Wanless salvaged a late goal for Sunderland five minutes before full time.

Sunderland Reserves: Alnwick, Taylor, Christensen, Dodds, Flynn, Dickman, Thornton, Ryan, Leadbitter, Teggart, Kingsberry. Subs: Carson, Piper, Graham, Bell, Wanless.
