Hot on the heels of recent speculation, Sunderland striker Stephen Elliott has been handed his first senior call up for the Republic of Ireland.
Elliott, 20, has been named in Brian Kerr’s 25 man squad to face Croatia in a friendly at Lansdowne Road on Tuesday 16th November (ko 7.30pm). The youngster, who has scored eight goals already this season, missed playing in Friday night’s ill-fated defeat against Millwall with a foot injury, but Kerr was quick to dismiss the problem as “a niggle”, and add that he was confident Elliott would be fit in time for the game.
Sunderland skipper Gary Breen is also in the squad, as is former Black Cats’ midfielder Kevin Kilbane. Manchester United’s Roy Keane has not been included in the squad.
