Radio Newcastle, that is.
Coming hot on the heels of the club’s confirmation that they will appeal against Gary Breen’s dismissal at Bramall Lane last night, it’s been confirmed that radio commentary on the game from BBC Radio Newcastle will form at least part of Sunderland’s evidence to have the decision overturned.
Commentator and ex Sunderland player Gary Bennett’s commentary said, “…it was nothing but handbags, they were just bumping into each other, it was nothing at all. That’s a disgraceful decision by the linesman…no arms were lifted at all.”
Sheffield United have also confirmed their decision to appeal as their player Andy Gray was also dismissed in the alleged incident and both team managers have condemned the referee’s actions.
The referee overseeing last night’s match was Mike Dean, who officiated during the recent West Brom vs Fulham match which saw bookings and unrest on the pitch.
Mick McCarthy said today that even the official match observer hadn’t seen the alleged incident between Breen and Gray and that in his opinion, the assistant referee was “40 or 50 yards away” at the time.
The hearing is likely to take place next Tuesday, 5th October.
