Caldwell to complete Tyne-Wear move

June 7, 2004 by rtg

Newcastle United’s Steve Caldwell is about to complete a free transfer deal that will see him become the first Newcastle – Sunderland transfer in seven years – the last one being Lee Clark.

Tonight’s Evening Chronicle reports that Caldwell has signed a pre-contract agreement to make him possibly Mick McCarthy’s third signing in a week – with Man City’s Stephen Elliott signing last week, and Pompey’s Carl Robinson expected to put pen to paper today.

SAFC Chairman Bob Murray confirmed back in the spring that Caldwell was being watched and would be offered a contract at some point after the season had ended.

The 23 year-old’s contract with NUFC expires later this month.
