North East media are this morning (Sunday) reporting that Newcastle United’s Steve Caldwell has finally put pen to paper on his much-anticipated move to Sunderland AFC.
Sunderland chairman Bob Murray said back in March that Caldwell would definitely be offered a contract “at some point”, and the Sunday Sun reports this morning that dealings have been successfully concluded.
Although official confirmation is still to come from both clubs, the paper reports that Caldwell, 23, passed his medical on Friday and signed yesterday.
The defender is reported to have said, “My focus is on getting Sunderland back into the Premiership. This is a big club and we want to get back into the Premier League.
“I’m delighted the move has finally gone through. I was impressed when I met the manager – he’s putting a good young team together.”
“I enjoyed my time at Newcastle but I’m ready to move on and I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead – I can’t wait for the season to start.”
