Sunderland today completed the signing of striker Darren Byfield from
Rotherham United in a deal that has taken Michael Proctor to Millmoor.
Byfield, 23, a former Aston Villa player, has signed until the end of
the season and is available for selection for tomorrow’s Nationwide
League game against Watford at Vicarage Road.
Darren has scored eight goals for Ronnie Moore’s side this season and
has found the back of the net 23 times in 58 starts for the South
Yorkshire side.
Mick McCarthy expressed his delight following the completion of the
deal: “He has played well against us twice this season and will offer us
blistering pace. I wouldn’t bring him in if I didn’t think he bettered
our squad. He’s a great addition to the side and will give us healthy
competition for places.”
Commenting on Proctors move to Millmoor, McCarthy said: “I just think
it’s time to change it around and freshen things up. He’s a great lad
and I wish him all the best. Its an opportunity for regular first team
football for him and as his contract was up at the end of the season it
gives him security for the future.”
