Mick: No future for Gray at SAFC

January 5, 2004 by rtg

Sunderland gaffer Mick McCarthy has said that one-time team captain Mickey Gray has no future at the Stadium of Light.

Gray signed professional papers with Sunderland in 1992 when he turned 18 and has remained at his hometown club ever since, until last summer when a loan period saw him move to Celtic.

That loan period ended on 31st December, but Celtic have retained Gray’s registration, and the player is in talks with Hoops boss Martin O’Neill about staying at Celtic Park on loan until the end of the current season.

During his time at Celtic, Gray has represented the Hoops at SPL, Scottish League Cup and Champions League level, most recently starting for Celtic in their 3-2 defeat to Lyon which saw them dumped out of the competition.

Mick McCarthy said “Michael Gray’s back and that’s not a problem, but I don’t see a future for him in the team here.”
