Sunderland AFC confirm the signing of striker Tommy Smith from Watford for an undisclosed fee.
The former England Under-21 international has today completed a medical and put pen to paper in deal which will keep him with the Black Cats until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old will link up with his new team mates at Durham City FC this evening as Sunderland reserves take on Everton.
Smith, began his career as a trainee with Watford in 1997, making 114 league appearances and scoring 35 goals for the Hornets. The 23-year-old left Watford in the summer after turning down a new contract.
Smith has been on trial with the Black Cats for the last three weeks and has impressed manager Mick McCarthy. He said:
“Tommy is pacy forward, he’s got good movement and a great touch. He’s a good footballer, who’s style suits the way we play and he will be a welcome addition to our squad.
” Having been at Watford for the duration of his career, I’m sure he will relish the fresh challenge with Sunderland.”
