Sorensen misses chance for debut

August 9, 2003 by rtg

Aston Villa’s newest recruit Thomas Sorensen missed his chance to make his debut alongside his new team-mates today in the Dublin Tournament.

The Villa squad – minus Sorensen – were unable to land at Dublin airport on Friday because of fog and were diverted to Shannon Airport. Sorensen, however, travelled later that day and was able to land in Dublin – but his colleagues didn’t arrive in the city until 2pm today, forcing the kickoff to be delayed until 4.15pm.

Manager David O’Leary then decided against including Sorensen for today’s match against his former employers Leeds United, who they beat despite their epic 27 hour journey. Sorensen is, however, expected to take part in tomorrow’s match against St Patricks Athletic, who beat Shelbourne 4-2 on penalties.

St Patricks’ will have a guest player in the form of Robbie Williams, who is in Dublin to play to an estimated 135,000 people in the city’s Phoenix Park on Saturday evening.
