MY GENERATION from the Who?
if you think that one then you have to go back to the Kinks you really got me, then if you think that you have to go back to the Beatles (sorry can't remember accurately without me books) but any of their early stuff was by the times, loud and punky, then if you go for that you probably have to go to where they got that from and sorry I forget but teed might know.
Kick out the jams - MC5
i dont get "punk" from you really got me
I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but that definitely came after My generation which tbf is a better shout, but both are just indicative of the rebelious youth and as such not really labelled as punk. Rebellion was rife in the 50's 60's and a little in the 70's music. Seems to all have conformed to what greedy and his ilk approve of nowadays.
it's what inspired Mr Townsend and was very in your face for the time (punk)
the husband of my mrs godmother was the manager of the kinks, apparently he never talks about them, he did to me one night ,on ray davies " the biggest waste of talent ever, he had more in his little finger than mick jagger would ever have"
still i hear "punk" in my generation where ive not heard it early, its an attitude thing obviously
There's a Beatles recording, and it's written about, from whe they were in Germany and their live show when they got back from Germany, they are dressed in their leather (very anti establishment) and have attitude like no one else at the time, and that is generally regarded as a pivotal time in music, when they kind of combined the Jimmy Dean look with the Elvis moves and the Buddy Holly music. The Kinks kind of modfied rather punkified it, and I definitely understand what you say about my Generation, because sometimes I put that on in my car, stop and say to people, listen, this was 196 fuckin 5 people and it still sounds as relevant and in your face powerful as anything ever released.
So while I find it difficult to disagree with you, I just like the roots to be properly identified and paid their dues. The Beatles were regarded as fuckin loud and punky for their time. Absolutely nothing main stream about them.
Oh and I have to tell you, I haven't a fuckin clue who my missuses godmother was, but it could have been Eva Braun
all of that i agree with, its just MG , takes it that one step towards "punk" for me
pete townsend thought that the sex pistols were the whos successors , when he met them in a club (pissed) he started screaming "who are you" at them
the whos song "who are you" is based on this
The problem is I don't think the SP had the musical intelligence to carry that mantel, and here's one for yer, Ironiocally in 78 Van Halen released a debut album that was punky hard hitting loud and in your face, now while they were equipped to take that on, thye didn't, they dropped into metal guitar widdle rock but if you listen to atomic punk, thats a real at yer in yer face loud fast punky relevant (to the time) track.
I love NMTb but I don't see the who as godfathers of punk, Pete annoys me coz he reckons Jimi nicked his tricks, then he reckons he invented mod, then he reckons he invented punk,
I honestly think he was a lifter who sat in the middle of a lot of different styles that fit MOR where people could relate and go off on a tangent that they expanded such as Jimi with the guitar smash, other bands expanded on the "heaviness" of MG, and other bands still exploited the teeny bop of Mods.
its tough at the top
