I have very few regrets about being a Sunderland fan for the last 37 years, although God knows I should have. However, the fact we never made Brian Clough our manager under the stewardship of Tom Cowie or Bob Murray is probably the biggest one. I, like many other 'old' members of this board will recall Cloughy's comments about 'crawling on hands and knees up the A1 to manage Sunderland' alas it was never to be. Steve Claridge talking about MoN today made the comment that 'deep down it's the job he always wanted' and I am struck by the comparisons between the two, not least by the fact that that MoN was the sorcerers apprentice during the glory years at Nottingham Forrest. I have never been fully satisfied by any managerial appointment at our football club in all my time, but should it happen, this will be the closest I ever get to feeling that history has in some way been redressed. For lots of reasons this appointment seems almost perfect.
