Police ready to take hard line

If it kicks off though, how can they say they told us so? - surely it's their decision to police it the way they are without escort/protection.

Can't see many people would see anything other than that for the reason. Yes we know they'd blame the late kickoff but irrespective of kick off time, they should do as they're told and paid for. Any copper playing this type of brinkmanship deserves everything coming....

They wanted bubble trips last year mate. Seems an unbelievable turnaround to me, particularly after witnessing them flying in, batons drawn from nowhere in December. It seems a give them enough rope scenario to me.

They clearly hate the 4.00pm kick off, yet the horse punching derby was a Sunday dinner time kick off. A lot of good an earlier kick off did them then.

It seems they felt they lost a bit of control with the joint statements from the club's last year so it seems a case of them saying go on let's see what happens then. Seriously, how can a game that had an away fan ban in recent memory, reduced away allocation, the scenes after our first at the SOL, England v Turkey and proposed bubble trips now be deemed a friendly derby by them just because a few poor sod died when a plane was shot down?

West Ham fans laid wreaths on the pitch in '92, due to the tragedy at Wearmouth pit, there were running battles near Central Station when we played Newcastle the following season.

Clubs only pay for cops in the ground tbf

Why? Because of the national negative publicity? Maybe the criticism for not doing an escort? Maybe because it reflects well on the Police if there's running battles? I'm intrigued.
I'm sure Quinny said on his roadshow that SAFC pay all police costs up to 500 metres around the stadium , then the council pays the rest.

Quite. I'll happily agree with you if you can tell me where the positive is for NP in loads of bother, .

As I've said, they want the power back. Loads of bother on Sunday, they can quite happily hammer the 4pm kick off and push for an earlier kick off next time. At present NP have zero power, they don't like that.

Yes but after the bubble fiasco where NP pissed off both clubs with their lies, thing changed. Now they do as they're told. Anything going wrong now is down to their incompetence.

I still reckon they fancy a bit rough and tumble though....;)

NP are playing a very dangerous game. Our city centre is nothing like Newcastle. The bars and everything in general is much closer together so if a few of their lot came through early, it would kick off badly imo. Then there's the issue of NP not protecting the public at all. Easy for a bystander to get caught up in it all and get seriously hurt and imo that is nothing more than NP failing to do their duty in protecting the public. Why not stop potential trouble before it starts instead of wading in after?

100% correct. I'm convinced they were gutted it didn't kick-off properly as, from what I saw, every time a punch was thrown the batons were out and they waded in. They were even in an unmarked Landrover and piled-out when one of their wankers goaded a lad I was with, then ran. I'm convinced he was on their payroll
The coppers did a really good job at last December's derby match imo.

Didn't feel at all under threat walking back to Central station afterwards.

You mustn't have seen the bloke in his 60s chinned by one of theirs, pretending to be with us then leggings behind a copper? I saw more people sparked out (generally the odd few of them who approached) than I have since 1993. It was reactionary and leads me to believe they couldn't wait for something to happen (a load of them hiding in full riot gear in a Landrover points to that)

And again, why would they want an earlier kick off if they're proved wrong and there's no bother this time? Do you think they'd still want early kick offs if this one goes smoothly?

No mate, i didn't. Seems odd that the coppers haven't highlighted these incidents to prove their/your point tho. If they want to gain back the control surely they would be shouting about these types of incidents from the rooftops instead of saying the game went by without much bother?

I never saw any actually fighting or even a punch thrown throughout the day tbh. I'm not saying nothing happened mind cos you obviously did.

For what its' worth, I'll be amazed if there's any mags (advertising the fact) in town come Sunday. Doubt there'll be much, if any bother before or afterwards.

I don't think there will be either tbh but it's just the way the coppers have changed their tune from December that gets me. They've gone from the city for everyone carry-on to issuing warnings.

I hear what you are saying mate. Sunderland's layout is completely different to Newcastle's mind. I would suggest a more hardline approach is probably necessary seeing as any "outwardly" mag has had to go out of his way to go wandering around Sunderland pre-match and as such is probably courting more attention/provocation.
The 4pm kick off does make me laugh mind. Absolutely mental.

The police had to say their "idea" was a success to justify the "idea" in the first place. It was as much as people didn't really know what was going on, that stopped any wide scale trouble. I still saw more fighting than I have in about 15year combined.

It was my first away derby in a while tbh and i must have just been lucky in not seeing any bother of note. I'm guessing you are more qualified than me to speak on this particular subject so fair enough.

Think it all depended on what time you got there and walked up mate. Talking to @DufraisFTM in the ground and him and his dad saw nothing either. I was on same train and large group with @Father Jack Hackett and we saw a canny bit. Think we were one of the last trains/metros through with most of our lot, so maybe more and more mags were out as more of our lot came through, so there was more waiting on the streets.
