How do you think the current team rates compared to Reidys team of 2000?
Better in keeper and defence, similar midfield, not a patch on the front 2
Was at a talk in at Chester Le Street Cricket Club last night and Mickey Gray was asked the same question. He did not really answer it but he said it was his dream to organise a game at the SOL between the millennium side and the current team.
The compare said 'you might lose mind'.
The current side is better in my view. They are younger and have the potential to improve significantly and they also have the benefit of a better manager and a more stable set up behind the scenes. The older side probably had better team spirit and that was the main reason they did so well.
Was there a black player in the 2000 team??
Was arguing this point just a couple of days ago at work. I maintain that Reid's team was the better based on the partnerships that his team excited us with. Quinn-Phillips. Gray-Magic. Makin-Summerbee. If your basing your argument blinded by transfer fees you would say Bruce's team is better.
Nee flies on you mate
You know what I meant, they are younger now than the 2000/2001 team was then. And by quite a bit.
Reid wasnt one for black players thats for sure & i did bring that up at the time.
Your right mate. Personally I think Reid stumbled across a team and basically got lucky. If he had been any good he would have had a team that wouldnt have capitulated like it did.
Althougth the loss of Rae and Hutchinson was the body blow that led to the 19/15pts imo as they were the central core of our team.
I was thinking something about Reidy today actually, whether some of his dealings were luck or whether he just knew / on the ball....
Clark: After the Tshirt thing, he could have kept him if he wanted, challenged him to overcome it etc. But did he just know that the spotty **** wouldnt be able to play for us in the same divison as NUFC, and play against them etc....so sold him???
Johnston: We were annoyed at the time, as in if hes under contract and we're paying, play him....he might be fucking off, but so was Macmanaman a year before he left Liverpool for Real, but they did. but no, Reid didnt want to....but Magic hardly set the clubs he left us for alight did he!!??
Bridges: he got rid, we were aghast!!! But he got £5m, and Bridges ended up injured and his career over!!
So, Reidy, lucky as fuck or saw it all coming?!!??
Admittedly he got lucky when injuries forced him into a Williams/Craddock central defensive pairing before getting promoted.
Selling them 2 in the same month etc was suicide!
As much as the credit went to Quinn & Philips , dont underestimate the part Summerbee & Johnson had to play
His biggest luck was signing Phillips. Reid may have seen something in him but that lad was phenomenal in front of goal for us.
IIRC he didnt, he wanted David Connolly (who was on a Bosman but ended up at Feynoord) and was recommended Phillips....might be wrong like.
I cant forgive him for that like, was actually criminal when you think about it. Central core of the team ripped out with nothing to replace it.
Am I right in thinking we all thought he had gone to sign somebody else but it was in fact Graham Taylor who said that Phillips was the better player?? Can't even remember who it was that he had gone to sign originally!!
Separate names with a comma.
