I think that he's a decent manager BUT, when he is given some cash to spend, doesn't spend it wisely - think back to the players he wasted it on here, following promotion.

Granted, he wasn't given a fortune to spend but the way he allocated the funds at his disposal was ridiculous - £1.25m for Davis (as an example) was crazy, considering that we, already, had two good goalkeepers on the books!

did great to get us promoted, some top finds for zero money that we made profits on.

But made a complete pigs ear the summer after promotion, weakening us needlessly/taking the momentum out of title winning side and , on the same budget as Wigan and West Ham who did well, made us the biggest embarrasment in a long time.

Very much like Danny Graham, anybody could have told you Stead, Gray were too slow and not good enough for the premier.

I must be one of the few who was actually excited when we signed Stead, having seen a number of his games/goals for Huddersfield (albeit only on TV), but it became quickly apparent that his time at Blackburn had changed his game and left him short of confidence in front of goal.

Don't think he was slow, though, even when he played for us he seemed nippy (on his feet, if not in his head) but must agree that Andy Gray was a carthorse and someone who Graham reminds me of!

It's bizarre, seeing how other managers have been treated, how he wasn't hounded out during the 15 point season. Not counting the first 2 weeks we were only off bottom spot over the whole season for 4 weeks in September/October, then went on a run of 14 games which yielded 1 point, a 0-0 at home against Bolton. We got an away win v West Brom then another run of 1 point from 10 games. No fight, no organisation, nothing.
As for having no money, Bolton finished 8th, Wigan 10th and Charlton 13th.

everytime we sign a striker like that i think FFS man, with all the scouts we have there must be loads of unproven, powerful pacey strikers who like to have a run at defenders and whack a few shots at the bloody keeper.

That era strikers like Andy G, Stead, Brown, Kyle, you could put them on the edge of the D unmarked and they would not take a shot.

Or you know when theres an error like Brown V Sanchez, or Stevie G v Ba- those kinds of strikers would be too slow to even run in and shoot (as would fletch!)

Would love to see Jozy in that situation though, he can run....but can just see his body language would be that of a man running in quicksand pursued by a pack of rabid dogs

Bassillaaaaaaaaaaaaaa , Nos, Murph, Delap would have all been ok squad fillers, but we really needed the signings for the spine of the team:

kelvin

Stubbs

Miller

Stead/ Gray

to come off, like De Zeeuw, Camara, Ryan Taylor did for wigan, and Gabbidon, Collins, Banayoun and later Ashton did for West Ham, but each one was a spectacular disaster

This is a brilliant post buddy. Sums it up completely.

Fergie identifies pace as one of the four fundamentals of a successful team. We never have any.

Divides opinion no end, seems out of his depth in the premier league but can hold his own in the championship, kick teams on & earn promotion. Doesn't make him a poor manager IMO, managing in the English second tier to great success ='s a quality gaffer

We were actually in for Gabbidon but he turned us down for West Ham. He said afterwards that he chose them because he believed they had a far better chance of staying up. (Probably being in London helped too like)

To the best of my knowledge Davis was hailed as a good signing on here
