No frills just get in the box & do some damage , just what we need now .
At their best, yes.
Big target men who pushed anyone out of the way to get on the end of a cross - what we lack now
They may have got on the end of a cross but did they score? The 76/77 season would suggest not.
Used to love both those lads.
RIP Mel. 26 years old.
Bob Lee Yes. Mel Holden, No, he was fuckin dreadfull.
The stats say different.
MH 73 appearances 23 goals.
BL 109 appearances 32 goals.
Neither prolific. Both reasonable. (Better than what we've got at the moment)
Bob Lee got called worse than muck and Mel Holden was seen as a joke figure (but little did we know). I remember one game when Holden was 10 or so yards clear with only the goalie to beat when he managed to accidentally back heel the ball to the chasing defender. That was the Holden we loved.
Better than im gonna fck off to the wing , Bentdner for sure
If either where anywhere near our team today they would get fucking slaughted on here.
Holden used to get dogs abuse( not off me like ) and Bob Lee was a clown with a cool song.
We were happy to support whomever played for the lads in those days of course not like kids today
Both got a lot of stick from the crowd at various times. Always liked Mel though..never shirked or hid.
Mel Holden once managed to put a shot over the bar and into the Roker End from 5 yards out.
Rod fucking Belfit managed to scoop one over the bar from the goal line. Defied the laws of physics
Still have the occasional nightmares about these two. To call them absolutely crap is insulting to crap.
Terrible, terrible players and symptomatic of the "bad old days" how anyone who saw them (and I use the word advisedly) "play" and consider them as being just what we need now is beyond any reasonable comprehension and anyone who does should be taken into the nearest woodland area and shot in the back of the head.
As for Rod Belfitt the very name makes me feel, literally, naseous. I need a lie-down ina darkened room...
Cult Heroes both of them. I have fond memories of both
Super Mel had something about him like Tricky Dickie - he could be brill or crap but he was our crap.
Bob Lee was just crap - for such a big guy, he was as soft as Craigy.
It was closer mate. Bristol City home on a Friday night. He may have scored the only goal in the game..
Holden had MS no one knew it at the time.
We bought Bob Lee when we were after Frank Worthington in his prime
Separate names with a comma.
