Similar for me (to be clear, I've never, to my knowledge, met your offspring). I've been self-employed (in partnership with others) most of my working life. There were times when I worked ridiculous hours, then out of the blue my dad died, aged 66 (having taken "early retirement" at 64) & that completely changed my world view. I left a fairly lucrative line of work to go it alone, still working hard but being answerable to no one but my (demeaning & demanding) self. Doing two things I always wanted to do as opposed to doing one thing that I happened to be good at which carried a certain cachet but which (having experienced it for many years) I grew to despise (not least for its hypocrisy, absence of integrity & skulduggery). So, for the last decade, far poorer in material terms, but a far richer life. That & stopping smoking the two best things I ever did for myself. Still a total ****, like. Some things nivva change.I’m sort of semi retired now. I’m self employed and work 4 days a week hours to suit me. When I was a young un I often worked 16 hour shifts and often was in London. I sort of missed my kids growing up to some extent tbh.
