It doesn't matter that he did well at Fiorentina and has had a canny game for Chelsea. It would be a different kettle of fish here.

With few passing options going forward and poor support from our wide players, he'd be left exposed too often and our fans would then write him off as shite.

We could give him some better shorts I guess.

Not good enough according to some wags on here. :)

He got passed more times than a bus stop when he was here, but hey don't let that stop you.

A lot on here have said.
Cattermole for England
PVA the best LB in the league
Pay Whickham whatever he wants, build a team around him, future superstar etc.
Kones worth £30 + Million etc.
Borini worth every penny (When we bid £14 Million, never mind the £10 Million we paid)
Coates an absolute bargain.

The list is endless

If we had paid £8m for him he would be a boo boy in the ilk of Billy Jones.
This club sucks the life from players and fans alike

I seem to remember him starting for Fiorentina in pre season for them, I'd imagine he'd pick them over us.
Florence maybe a beautiful city but they pay a pittance compared to any premier club

Mate he was good and iirc it was around £6m. We're 3 years on and still need a left back. We should have coughed up the money. Yet another poor decision to add to the long list.
None of us have a clue whether he would have signed.
Too easy to blame the club.
Do you believe the club made moyes pay 8m for papy or 13m for ndong when mvila was available for 6m?
Maybe alonso didnt like pdc or poyet?
Maybe he wanted a football education in serie a.

All very good points.

At the start of pre-season after his loan spell Fiorentina wanted a few million for him. We did our usual trick of refusing to pay up for proven quality and after a few weeks training they decided they wanted to keep him. We then spent half that amount on PVA who is a about one tenth the left back Alonso is. Realistically we should have bought both of them given Alonso can also play on the left of a back three.

Another great example of our fantastic recruitment at work. Oh, and Poyet was desperate for him to come back...but no, it's all down to the managers apparently.

Then Bain comes out with "We need to sign young players and sell them on"....well, we'd have got about 24m for this one if it hadn't been scuppered by upper management, is that the sort of thing he's suggesting?

This f***ing club. If they let the managers do their job and were willing to spend based on quality not some bizarre idea of value which is clearly broken then we might not be in this mess.

It makes you weep...his quality was obvious

Thought he was bang average when he was here, my hands are help up!

He was that rare thing for a Sunderland player...he could possession under pressure and use the ball well....on that left hand side only really Julio and Malbrangue could do that in recent times

How many assists did he get

THIS , I am mystified by some of the comments on here , it took him a few games but he clearly was quality , you coud see he had class, a few on here have forgotten that he scored one of the two pens that got us to wembley as well.

Exactly the issue. Glad sounds like Bain has seen it.

The difference in class/potential between them has been obvious for a long time, even before either of them rocked up here. One is a kid who chelsea took a punt on early but was never anywhere near good enough for them, the other has been at smaller clubs and always played/been highly rated as a player on the rise.

We signed the one least likely to increase in value AND and less able to improve us in the short term purely to save a couple of million on the initial fee. Idiots.

We need to stop buying players from Chelsea and Man City......PVA, Papy, Rodwell, Johnson....£30m for that lot.

Spot on. We think too much. A bad trait for f***ing idiots.

He looked like a genuinely excellent prospect for us. this isn't hindsight talking, i said as much at the time and was amazed to see so many disagreeing.
