a family member, who served and died in the first world war?
hopefully a free one if possible
there is I'm sure of it.
ihave a friend who just did it to trace a great uncle.
i'll give her a ring and see is she can help.
The link above allows you 14 days free trial membership, I think. (that's to all of the site not just WW1 veterans).
that commonwealth war graves site will give you a good start.
Unfortunately many of the WW1 paper records were destroyed in an air raid in 1942 so any site you use will be incomplete.
cheers all so far.
i have been on that ancestry site, a canny bit but with no luck as of yet.
cant believe how common my surname was back in the late 1800s and up to and including the 1st world war
I got a copy of my great grendads medal card from the National Archive
and The Long, Long Trail is a great source of info and help
superb stuff Berek lad. cheers
my dad is through on sunday, so i can help him through these sites.
heres a better link in the National Archive
i knew the smb would come up trumps on this one
Found him for you:
Try this one too
a bit shorter but not far off to be fair
your surname is usually 1,what your dads name was ie.johnson, robson etc .2,where or what you lived near ie.hill, fields, beech,ford..etc or 3,what you did for a living,ie.smith.miller.cartwright...
excellent site that, they do a certificate you can print off for free
there are quite a few with the cartwright surname, born similar dates and in the same area.
i will comeback to this thread, when i find the exact one. we have a basic outline of his service, medals and regiment. he died in may 1918 and fought from the start, the poor sod
the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
they have a website and will send you a certificate stating where he is buried and i believe grave number.
you'll definitely get it from the cwgc site if you know his regiment and date of death like
we do. i will have to get the info off my dad but this thread has been a massive help
thanks all again
