Huge issue for me. The school I work at is due to become an academy in September. I disagree with the principle of academies but lots of schools in the area are transferring over and the cuts in services to schools that dont are absolutely horrendous. In short the school at least in the short / medium term will be much better for students as an academy mainly down to the 750k the school gets being able to protect its services. Many teachers are concerned because our pay and conditions are transferring into the hands of the Governing body. However despite this I think its definitely better for the school to change over and feel really strongly about it. The Union have held a ballot on strike action - from a 50 percent turn out it got the majority it needed for strike action. The local union reps have been horrendous coming out with comments like 'if you dont support the union action totally you should leave, or even better go into a room and put a gun to your head' Should I: a) Go on strike and picket, thats what unions are for I might need them in the future even though i'm dead against their action. b) Go on strike and not picket - at least i'm not visably supporting the action. c) Not be a sheep and go into work even though i would lose a lot of friends over it. d) Leave the union and join another one.
