EU Wanted to Help British Steel Industry...

Watch it fella, you'll be grouped with us loons that look past blaming governments for everything and actually think how one course of action could have a chain effect on others
It's so frustrating. Any excuse to jump on either side of the fence. So many are just so eager to dive in with both feet.

But that's rather short term thinking. If you let EU steel industry die do you think the Chinese prices will stay low or will they, in the absence of competition, hike up the prices? Also, I like to think of things a bit more holistically, you might be spending some money to keep a "failing" business going but that money comes back in taxes, keeping other local businesses going, not having to pay out welfare etc.
We could bring coal back, shipbuilding too, we used to be good at textiles too, subsidise the lot. Where do you think all this money comes from? It's not some magical pot we can take people's tax money out of to pay to private companies constantly.
The steel industry was subsidised for years and still failed to survive, there's only so much can be done by a government subsidy wise. Look at the losses tata were making it's just not sustainable. And I bet even with a 9% tariff china is still cheaper than Western European steel

Chinese steel is largely f***ing rubbish. That's why it's cheap.

It's a bit of a disingenuous article - the EU didn't 'try to save' the UK steel industry at all, more likely they wanted to ensure that the German steel industry wasn't too affected by this issue, As a secondary and unintended consequence, this may or may not have helped the UK . The Conservatives have no interest in UK industry other than what is invested by foreign companies/countries, as long as it is profitable - free money for doing next to nothing essentially.

Germany makes big metal things and so the EU (which is essentially run for the benefit of Germany) wants to ensure that its own steel industry can supply its own factories etc. We don't make anything for all intents and purposes - so the point of a UK steel industry is only really valid if it supplies our own factories, which are minimal.

Should we ever start to manufacture on a large scale, then a steel industry in the UK has immense validity.

Of course it is, it's in that socialist rag The Mirror. The idea that The EU has our best interests at heart is farcical.

I predict the UKIP lobby will studiously ignore this story or try and spin it to suit their agenda
Ill bite ;) why would the UKIP lobby spin it? If the EU commission wanted to raise tariffs on cheap Chinese steel they will do it with or without us its majority voting now. They could have announced this months and months ago that this is what they intend to do and let our Government squirm (pity they didnt unless i missed it?). That they havent poses the question why not?
Personally i happen to agree that we should do something to stop the flooding of the market and help keep this industry alive (but of course im UKIP so what i think doesnt matter as im a right wing loon ;))

Good enough for cheap cars tho no doubt. It's pointless making such high grade Steel that you have a very small customer base for it

Would you rather it came from a Tory-supporting arsewipe?

UK Blocks Move To Stem Cheap China Steel
Sky News
And if they make steel so expensive how is that going to help the price for their own manufacturing industry, all it does is drive up the prices of everything made of steel, so it may help US Steel compete with Chinese in their market but it increases the price of all thing made of steel to customers don't you think

aye, much better to dump thousands of folk on the dole and ruining lives, destroying already decimated areas just to court our chinese friends.
it really does sadden me that business and profit are far more important than people.

It's not a question of whether things are currently set up to be a race to the bottom, it's whether that's what we as a society want it to be and whether we should do anything about it.

(The answers are No and Yes, in case you were wondering)
I think living in the western world has somewhat distorted logic. Otherwise it's yes and no
