1 point off automatic promotion, yet only 14,000 there today.
Middlesbrough have a population of 140,000 about half that of Sunderland. Catchment area wise they have no where the population to call upon than that of the greater Sunderland area. Also they have Hartlepool and Darlington in their immediate neighbouhood.
As someone who attended Roker Park in 1972 V Swindon in front of a 7000 crowd and previous to that in 1970 (in the top flight) at Roker V Tottenham in front of a 13,000 crowd I have learnt to never gloat over attendences.
Doesn't help that unemployment in Boro is massively high now.
The epitome of "shit club, shit fans"
if ever a boro team deserves support, it's this one. Mowbray's building a good team at the Riverside.
It's their last year with the parachute payments from their relegation this season. If they don't come back up this season then they'll be down there for 10 more years.
Valid and often mentioned point, but Teeside has a population of 365,000. Stretch it a bit further to include Hartlepool, Eaglescliffe and Yarm, and you have a catchment area of nearly 500,000. Should be able to get a decent crowd out of that lot.
I think the squad they have has this season and next to get back up or they're fucked
Corect. Gibson is no longer bankroling them, and if they're staying within their means, they're a relative medium-sized fish in the Championship.
Shame. I'd like to see them promoted and in the PL. I have no truck with Middlesbrough.
But they hate us, which means when we beat them it's really funny, because they hate it and we treat as any other win, which pisses the smoggy twats off more
We always seem to do well against them, so for that reason I'd like to see them promoted. Even beat them during the 15 point season.
In all honesty though, I'd rather they were there in the PL rather than some no-mark team such as Swansea. Better for the NE.
Fickle as fuck. Always have been, always will be
It's Teesside & the catchment area is just the south bank of the Tees & Stockton, (which includes Eaglescliffe & Yarm) & a little bit of a presence in North Yorkshire (Stokesley, Thirsk, Northallerton etc). Stockton has a fairly large Sunderland contingent & most of the people in North Yorkshire that I know claim Leeds as their team. Hartlepool & Darlington have nothing to do with Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough also has high unemployment even by North East standards & their ticket prices are higher than a lot of Premier League clubs.
Dress it up any way you want, there will be half a million people in a 10 mile radius of Middlesbrough, thats a decent catchment area.
Aye, even Tommy Miller (can't do white text on my phone) scored. But Julio's freekick was stunning
That's like saying Wigan have a huge catchment area.
Totally misses the point.
Wigan have to compete with the likes of Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Everton.
Boro have Pool and Darlo nearby.
There's another club that takes a lot of support from the Boro "catchment area".
looked deserted when I put it on yesterday, hope they go up many a drunkun session down that hovel
Down here in Thirsk I've never seen a Boro top yet after 2 years. Leeds United however seem to be well supported.
