Biggest let down ?

Barclay James Harvest at the Empire around 90-91
Saw them in the 70s when prog was at its pomp.
In the 90s Jeez what a boring gig. Walked out after they did Mocking Bird half an hour into their set.

I went to see them in the 70's after hearing a couple of songs of theirs. Apart from Mockingbird they were a huge let down. Mind, I had seen Genesis a few weeks previously so I suppose they would have been hard-pressed to impress after that.

Other disappointments that come to mind:

Dave Lee Roth at City Hall after VH split. I was expecting a VH-type performance but he came on stage with a Tuxedo and dickie-bow and sang crooner songs. Should have been done under the trades descriptions act.

Extreme, Whitley Bay Ice Rink 1991? Went to see them off the back of liking my mate's Pornograffiti album and imagined they would be class live. They made no impression.

Joe Satriani at Newcastle Arena 1995. Joe is an incredible guitar player but at that stage of his career hadn't learned to engage with the crowd in any way. And his music isn't really jump around stuff. The place was full of adoring teenage guitar hero-worshippers and middle-aged men who were keen to see the "World's Best". Joe did his stuff, shredding away consummately but it all just seemed to meld into a stream of shredding guitar with an occasional slower melody thrown in here and there. The crowd simply stood still, watching him. The highlight of the performance for me was his bass-players solo which was class.

Kings Of Leon, City Hall, around 2005? The place was like a furnace. They came on, played their songs in a grudging way, and fucked off. Not a single word was spoken to the crowd. Really poor.

Iggy Pop.

I gave myself the night off working on the door, when he came to our club, so I could watch the show properly.

He was absolutely wasted and couldn't remember the words, the crowd sang more than he did ...... lasted about 20 minutes and just walked off.

Saw Van “the Man” Morrison once and thought he was brilliant.

Saw him on two other occasions he walked off stage early on our second visit and we walked out on him on our third.

Now I just shop at Morrison’s
Saw him a few times when he didn't seem arsed.
Our boy asked me to go to Edinburgh to see him but I wouldn't chance it.
Apparently he pulled out all the stops, even played Tupelo Honey

Kiss at Donnington in 88, pretty much got booed off stage, f***ing dreadful, Maiden were headline and were fantastic.

I got free tickets in '91 (I think) and the crowd kept hoying bottles of piss at Poison. That about summed them up.

Also went to see the bluetones (to keep the mrs happy) at the mayfair. f***ing rubbish, bored the shit out of me.

Meatloaf in around 2004 or 2005. His voice was well and truly shot. I Couldn't even be sure whether he was forgetting lyrics or if his voice was just so bad you couldn't make them out!

Bob Dylan was the worst though. Laughable.

Thank god I'm not the only one. The reverence for this bloke baffles me. Rudimentary guitar player with a shit whiney nasal voice who sang a few well-timed protest folk songs fifty years ago and has been totally taking the piss since then. I hope before he dies that he makes a death bed confession that his entire career has been one huge piss take to see how far he could push the gullibility of the music-consuming public.

Anyway, I wasn't a huge fan but was curious to see the Cocteau Twins at Newcastle Tiffanys about 1985 ish. They played a total of forty minutes and fat lass only said "last one" before the last song, that was the entirety of their engagement with the crowd.

I also got in free to some event at the University of Houston at which T.I. was 'playing'. 15 retards on stage grunting and cursing, no sign of an instrument in sight. So bad I wanted my money back!

That's fair enough but I actually like Bob Dylan.

Saw them at the city hall maybe 80 or 81 also not long after Genesis who were superb. I thought BJH were alright.
Dave Lee Roth at City Hall after VH split.
Seen him at Whitley bay ice rink and thought he was great.

Agree with you on this one. Also seem to remember the bass player popping a canny few pills. The set list was canny, the delivery was poor.

I think maybe it was there that I saw him. After I posted my comments I started having doubts about the venue. Was he short-haired in a Tuxedo when you saw him? I seem to recall he had no backing band but was singing along to recorded music. I may have been pissed, mind :lol:.

Not entirely sure why, could have been the ten pints of skittles I'd had, but I thought Chesney Hawke on freshers week at Northumbria was going to be immense.

Instead I just saw a man's soul wither and die slowly on stage. He tried to play new songs from his album whilst pissed students screamed 'I am the one and only' over and over at him before booing until he stopped mid-song and just said 'fine'.

Commence him playing his one-hit wonder with a look of utter disgust at everyone. Was like watching a car crash in slow motion.

It was 1991 . He had a full band. If you look on youtube there is footage of the tour that will jog your memory. Not as good as Van Halen but i enjoyed the show.
Eat em and smile was a good album, but it went downhill after that.

Stu Hamm, tremendous bass player, seen Joe Satriani a couple of times.

So people have been to see a load of shite like Dylan, Sting, Clapton, Queen, Dave Lee Roth, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Kiss, Motley Crue, Mastodon :lol:, Extreme, Meatloaf etc and have expected them not to be shite.

Stone Roses - first night at Heaton Park. The day in Manchester and build up was brilliant, but the anticipation far outweighed their 'performance'

Weller @ Glastonbury - I think when it's a big festival crowd and people aren't there exclusively to see you, the rule of thumb is play a few 'crowd pleasers' ?? You don't need to stick to your 'solo career, album track only' back catalogue that even your own fans couldn't quite remember !!!

Hmmmm...watched the footage and that was not how I remembered it. He was dressed in dinner suit and the whole gig was like something you'd expect from Frank Sinatra. Unless time is doing things to my memory....

Paul Carrack at the London Palladium. Was impressed by the venue and that was about it. Competent musicians but so so boring.
Even he looked bored by it all.
