You don't just 'bumble' your way through a medical degree nor do you rely on who your parents are to pass exams, at least not if you're doing medicine.

If you're registered with a healthcare registry body presumably you're familiar with a number of doctors, and you'll surely know that doctors on the whole come from well-off backgrounds. Most junior doctors will be able to rely at least in part on family money if they need to fight a case.
Bless :D

Yes I accept that. But your talking about a totally different level of wealth here. Being well off and being from a multi millionaire family are two entirely different things.

Even still stating most Dr's come from wealthy backgrounds further supports what I said.

That most doctors are wealthy means they're on a level playing field.

The GMC will know the calibre of legal advice and representation their doctors receive and will seek to make sure their side of things is good enough to get by.

I'm sure the Osbornes can buy a great legal team but that doesn't mean the GMC are just going to roll over.

If you or @RTRsBM have an actual disagreement you can put together by all means post it

If not carry on with your witty remarks, it's hilarious

We'll have to agree to disagree then mate. all I can say is Ive witnessed with my own eyes (not necessarly health service related) that money talks and the priviledged usually dont get the same treatment as ordinary folk.

I don't disagree that money talks, but I do disagree that he's bought his way out of this bother.

We'll meet again, some sunny day ;)

Ok I'll bite. Can you show me any other cases of people writing fraudulent prescriptions whilst training who were allowed to continue as doctors? Ffs he couldn't even wait until he was qualified before he was a wrongun.

I think you're misinterpreting the word 'training' mind. Osborne was in specialist training, he had completed his medical degree and foundation training. He was in training to be a specialist yes, but he was by a number of years, a qualified doctor.

Wasn't he allegedly prescribing anti psychotics to some other vulnerable drug dependant lass he was shagging while his wife was away ? .
If so, just the standards we need in or consultants a bit of Rock and roll

The issue here is is wealth and privilege:

  • Adam Osbourne was sacked by the NHS for professional misconduct
  • Despite being sacked he was set up in private consulting rooms because he was well connected
  • He used his consulting rooms to take and supply drugs, and was found guilty
  • He was given a non-custodial sentence rather than prison because he was well connected
  • Because he was given a non-custodial sentence and was well connected he avoided being struck off the medical register
  • He was re-instated and allowed to practice medicine again because he was well connected
  • He re-opened his practice because he was well connected
  • He used his practice to abuse patients

It is his connections and the help of his rich friends and family which have allowed him to continue harming patients and himself. A normal Dr who didn't have Osbourne's friends and connections would have lost his license to practice years ago.

The extent to which George Osbourne was involved in pulling strings for his brother we will never know. But there are 2 things which are clear:

  • George Osbourne and his class demand the strictest penalties for the transgressions of others, but feel that these same punishments don't apply to them and their families
  • George Osbourne is a twat.

I want to disagree with you but given your work history I can't really disagree with you.

The system should have picked up Adam Osbourne's patterns of behaviour much earlier, and there should have been a proper intervention.

For his own sake and the sake of his patients he should have been dealt with properly. Instead he faces the likelihood of his medical career ending and a life in disgrace, which he will no doubt reflect on ruefully from a villa in San Tropez.

No doubt he has money but I can't see what influence his family money and connections would have on the GMC.

I just don't buy it. I know you're very well up on matters relating to this but I can't see it.

You are right - it shouldn't be possible.

But it is.

Every study that has looked at GMC decisions, internal NHS disciplinary processes, Royal College Membership, etc. shows clear patterns of bias. This is just one of the most egregious examples. Some of it might be that some people have better lawyers, some might know the system a bit better, but there is systematic bias in these institutions. I've watched generations of Jr Drs go through the system, through membership exams and into consultant and GP posts. I've known people go through hell with GMC investigations. There is a clear bias in the way the system treats people. Some of it is race, but a lot of it is class.

I inherited a Dr like that in a re-organisation - everyone knew he was hopeless, but he stumbled through the system, endlessly being shuffled around, moving from primary care to public health and back again. He was utterly useless, but incredibly posh and well connected. In the end I got him moved on, but it was a hell of a job. Adam Osbourne was outside the NHS system so there was no one like me looking over his shoulder and making sure he was dealt with properly.

Adam Osbourne was treated more leniently by the GMC because of his wealth and connections. It shouldn't happen, but it does.
