Came on as a sub when we won 1-0 to stay up. Paisley forgot to tell him not to try and score against us very well loved and his young un was brought up in Whitburn.

Wasn't it McCoist's first goal v Shilton - similar description?

Inconsistent is about right but on his day was a class act

Never really knew what his best position was. He'd often get played as a winger but I think he preferred more of a front role. He certainly put himself about a bit.

The Forest goal is my main recollection of him, and yes it was in the Roker End.

IIRC we had some talented forward at that time - Gayle, Hodgson, Roger Wylie (sp?), Clive Walker, were all good on the ball and capable of bringing others into the game as well as scoring goals themselves - but we never seemed to have a settled team. Colin West was a bit of a battering ram and god-only-knows how Ian Wallace got picked for the Milk Cup Final team.

Roger Wylde marra. Wallace getting picked was Ashurst's biggest fuck up for the final.

Yer reet lad! Shilts left them in 82! I've searched and searched for info on this game, but can't find much more then the result!

Would love to see the goal again!

Absolutely. I recall a rumour doing the rounds at the time that they (the club) had agreed to sell West even before the final. No idea if it had any basis in fact mind.

Rumour had it that West had punched Ashurst after a previous game so was never gonna figure in the final, shame 'cos it definatley would have been better than having Wallace up front, he was garbage.

Was a strange decision to make. Never heard that rumour before but it could have certainly been true given what happened that day. Remember hearing the team and everyone was thinking what the fuck.

part of the problem was that we beat Norwich away just a week or two earlier with Wallace scoring two goals. Ashurts clearly believed lightening was gonna strike twice IMO
