To use the absence of Gyan as a reason for having a shit season is pushing it a bit though. Reading through the Gyan thread and by most accounts he would have been neither use nor fucking ornament given his mental and physical state had he stayed.

it would be nice to assume a £13million international footballer will turn up at least a little bit ready to play, that wasn't sunderland's fault.
i will definitely concede one thing though. we were heading into a season with one recognised forward which was a massive risk anyway. even if gyan was spot on and raring to go he could have been seriously injured in the first minute of the first game. the net result would have been exactly the same, no striker.
maybe it just highlighted we hadn't spent well up front and were already threadbare.
that said, take away the "missing" striker and the actual squads are a lot closer.
