They hounded him out the club and as soon as he'd left they realised they were stupid and pretended it didn't happen.

Born in Langley Park, Eric Gates reckons he used to look for the Sunderland results when he was manager of Ipswich. Regular attendee of games at the SOL post Newcastle days.

The probable truth is, like most people of his age he supported North East football and would look out for all of the results.

My dad and his mates would go to Roker Park and St James alternately, fortunately he brought me up properly and didn't make me go to the dark side.

But they've rewritten history and airbrushed that bit out.
Every toon fan wanted him to stay and wept the day he left, and only FFS thought he should go. If you can remember numerous callers to phone-ins saying "Sir Bobby's taken us as far as he can and it's time he left" then you must be imagining it.

Didn't we try to get him as Manager when he was at Ipswich ? he wanted to come here but Ipswich wouldn't let him go according to my dad.

Don't think the Statue is in the right place but he's a legend in English and North East Football nonetheless.

The football world loves him so a nice gesture looks good to the media. Sad how fans around the world forget what he was treat like.
