Except the times when we (wrongly) play him up front by himself, at which point he is lost.
That isn't strictly true. If you are the focal point for your team's attacks then you will usually be instructed not to chase back past a certain point. Otherwise, when your team regain possession, you aren't where you should be, and you've closed down the space by having your body in there, and allowing the opposition to commit another body in there with you (as there is no longer a threat up the pitch)
Depends on the system, but most will not want the main striker dropping back into his own third of the pitch, unless it's late in the game.

That is total bollocks as for years we have had 10 outfield players in the box from corners.
