Default Ludicrous topic - but I need this board's persepctive to settle a bet...

In the UK, the typical brown sauce (e.g. HP) has vinegar and thus a distinctive "sour" flavor over a standard gravy.

In Ireland, there's a sauce that comes in small thin packets with chips that pretty much tastes like gravy. I'm not sure the brand but it seems like every pub has it in the little "packet carrier" full of ketchup, mustard, etc.

My mate wouldn't shut up about it throughout the whole second half of the match and swore that there are two different kinds of brown sauce. I contend there's really only one "brown sauce" and it's the UK version...what he's talking about is a gravy of some kind.

So, what's the answer? Are they both "brown sauce" or is there only one definitive version (the UK version)? And if they are different, what's the name / brand of the Irish stuff?

There are many different types of brown sauce. I suppose the "proper" brown sauce is simply a matter of perspective.
