However, "... a Sunderland steward reported Barton's behaviour (making gestures that referenced Newcastle's 5-1 victory over Sunderland in October 2010) to stadium control at the Stadium of Light and that "the QPR bench were requested to ask him to stop inciting supporters" ..." Really ? That is the best thing that a steward (who is primarily responsible for contributing towards the management of off-the-field activities) has to do in the lead up to a game ? Again, really ?

Presumably this is because some fans complained to the steward about Barton's gestures (and one can only conclude that Barton must have the mime abilities of Marcel Marceau to convey an insult about a match played 17 months earlier with such devastating effect).

"Oh please, kind sir, make it stop ! Never have our finer sensibilities been so offended. My friend, Miss Smith has already fainted and Miss Jones is going to need long-term support to overcome the pschological trauma of what we have witnessed. Miss Brown has already indicated that she won't be able to get more than four expeletives into her every comment and she can normally be relied upon for at least six. I am also in need of the aid of a physician, as I am about to have a fit of the vapours. Please, for the love of all that is right and good, make it stop !"

At which point the complainant dropped her parasol, clasped her white cotton gloved hands before her eyes, allowed her bonnet to slip to a provocatively jaunty angle and fell into the arms of the steward. A flunkey was then dispatched to advise the QPR management to remind Mr Barton that he is an officer an a gentlemen and that he should curb his behaviour accordingly or prepare to give satisfaction at dawn, with either sword or pistol.

And as for QPR fans being offended by Barton 'laughing and joking' with others on the bench, this presumably is because the appropriate behaviour should have been for him to be snarling and screaming his team-mates onto greater efforts. Although this would have probably been provocatively offensive to the Sunderland fans. The poor lad just can't win, can he ?

I think football fans that complain about this sort of stuff are invariably looking to be offended. Barton has, throughout his career, regularly demonstrated that he is an idiot. Can you imagine how pleased he was to be advised that his antics had got under some Sunderland fans' skins ? Fans need to ignore his idiocy, otherwise he will be encouraged all the more.
Not necessarily. It could have been preventative measures from the stewards. If they felt that some of the crowd were becoming too wound up and were in danger of 'confronting' our friend Joey, they may have asked the QPR staff to get him to stop.

Whilst I agree that we should not rise to his insults (inventive as they may be) it's part of a footballers lot to take both abuse and adulation.

I will say (and I never thought I'd say this ) great credit to Andy Carroll who gets almost as much abuse off Sunderland supporters as Barton does, and yet he never reacts.

Barton's got previous of winding up crowds (and not just us). The reason the FA are potentially involved is that he is supposed to be a professional. He is at his place of work. He should not be interacting with the crowd in that way.

I wasn't offended by what he did. I didn't find it particularly funny either-- I mean, 5-1? It's soooo last year.

Being an attention seeker with blatant emotional issues isnt a good mix like. He'll fall quickly after football and there will be no fucker to catch him. I bet his mates and family bleed the fucker dry aswell

I for one wasn't upset at his 5-1 signals, it was an obvious response to stick from the crowd.
That was funny as fuck that like, he walked all the way down the bench and started winding up Barton, stewards did nowt and he was allowed to go back to his seat.

i was just laughin at the bloke when he made the gesture.

    All banter man ffs.

Though i'm still of the opinion that barton shouldnt be anywhere near a football pitch after what he did. any one of us lot would struggle to get another job if we'd done a similar thing.

Although I hate Barton, I dont get this.

Why does making a gesture to opp. fans mean he is "more concerned" with that, than the match?

Should, because they are 1-0 down, he ensure a stone face is the onlyt one he wears, and at no points do anything other than watch the match, that he cant do anything about anyway?

Got to agree. It's all give and take. He doesn't get upset when fans remind him of his hard case murdering brother and reminding him of his whole neanderthal family. He just loves the banter.
