I thought France operated a secular school system which didn't allow religion.

is this only valid for state schools.

I'm not sure if the Jewish school in question was fee paying or not.

As always wikipedia has some relevant info - the Ozar Hatorah schools are privately funded basically (by a mix of sources).

Yes.

Could do with a similar system in this country, kids should go to school to learn, not be indoctrinated.

On the other hand the French also refuse to give any money to Breton or German language schools, which I think is wrong.

I'd agree with you on both, assuming the Breton and German language schools are also giving teaching in French. I suspect we've had state schools and religious institutions tied together for so long that it'd be a right mess to decouple them, of course.
