If you aren't arsed about looking good get a Nissan Micra. Reliable and you can get decent ones for about a grand

Probably shouldn't be buying a car at all then to be quite frank.

    why?

first time drivers have the highest percentage of writing cars off.

Could get a semi-decent bike for that much.

BMW M3, ideal first cars and cheap as chips.

Or maybe a Ford Ka - cheap to run, don't look too shit and you'll have plenty of choice for under a grand. Just give it a good look over for rust and a rigorous test drive.

Oh I know the stats, but the "I'm likely to write it off" doesn't fill me with confidence in your driving ability. Have a bit of self belief but not enough to drive like a dickhead and everything will be fine.

TBH,for your budget,no matter what you buy,you will have to spend money on repairs.
look for something where the spares are cheap and available, like a ford, vauxhall etc
