    Right, I've 'found' a load of kindle books on the laptop. How do I transfer these to an iPad and into the Kindle app on said iPad.

    Download a program called Calibre Ebooks, its fairly self-explanatory

    On the kindle app you cannot add your custom books, only those bought from amazon(iirc). Download calibre and convert to apple format and add to itunes.
