i can do it in under 3 hrs easy and this route avoids the hell-hole that can be the m62.

It does. Your suggestion would be the best option IMO.

I would go A66/M6. About 10 miles further but fast open road all the way and you avoid Leeds and Manchester. A1(M) is a proper shitefest in North Yorks.
