History repeating itself??
Sorry in advance, this is another mag thread, but rest assured I'm not obsessed with them, unlike many on here.
I've been thinking...(could be dangerous) this side they're building. It seems to be full of foreign players again, just like the Newcastle of old. There's no solid english spine. There are no players that know the passion of a derby game.
I've seen this touted by many as their new team...
Krul Simpson Taylor Coliccini Santon Gutierrez Cabeye Tiote Ben Arfa Ba Cisse. Where's the British spine the likes of City, Spurs, Chelsea & United have?
They went this way in the early 00's and it culminated with them being staffed by a bunch of mercenaries like Viduka & Kluivert et al and eventually lead to them getting relegated.
I had my fears that Sunderland would do the same thing, it looked increasingly like that was the way Bruce was heading - not so under O'Neill hopefully. We had lacked the fight and spirit in recent months (before O'Neill) and even more so in recent derbies.
I can see Newcastle going the same way once again, I'm sure they've signed good players, but so did we. I'm not saying outright they'll get relegated again, that'd be ludicrous, but it doesn't seem they've learnt their lesson.

Does mentioning Arsenal ruin your point?

Re: History repeating itself??
hate to pour cold water over your suggestion but Ashley tends to flog players after signing players so they don't get into financial meltdown.
This is the same team that basically relied on 3 players last year. 2 of those were sold and the other was Tim Krul. Given kept them afloat for several years and I suspect Krul will do likewise.

If you read it properly you'll see I'm theorising about the future. Just a thought, not a concrete prediction...

They have been throwing money at so-called big name players for years and have won fuck all to show for it...
Nothing is gonna change...

In the early noughties we managed to finish 4th, 3rd and 5th. Are you suggesting we'll replicate this?

To insinuate that you need a "solid English spine" is ridiculous.
How come 'there are no players who know the passion of a derby game'? What about all their foreign players who have played in derbies?
English players are massively overpriced.
Wickham proves that fact - I hope he'll fulfill his potential, but there's no way he would have cost what he did, had he not been English.
Face facts - for teams like the mags and us for whom financial considerations are paramount, English players are rarely going to get you the best return on investment.
