Doing it this way he takes the flack (which he's not bothered about in the slightest) and gets the advertising while the next sponsor comes in knowing that there's going to be a minimal amount of grief for them and that the press are already used to talking about something other than SJP.

That's what I thought when it was first announced, but I'm not so sure now. The resistance and the press continuing to call it St. James Park seems to have just advertised to potential sponsors the resistance anyone will face, and not just from the fans.
I'm starting to think if Ashley had waited for a proper reputable brand, there would have been much less resistance from the council and from the press.
