The Brian Clough we never had.
I have very few regrets about being a Sunderland fan for the last 37 years, although God knows I should have. However, the fact we never made Brian Clough our manager under the stewardship of Tom Cowie or Bob Murray is probably the biggest one. I, like many other 'old' members of this board will recall Cloughy's comments about 'crawling on hands and knees up the A1 to manage Sunderland' alas it was never to be. Steve Claridge talking about MoN today made the comment that 'deep down it's the job he always wanted' and I am struck by the comparisons between the two, not least by the fact that that MoN was the sorcerers apprentice during the glory years at Nottingham Forrest. I have never been fully satisfied by any managerial appointment at our football club in all my time, but should it happen, this will be the closest I ever get to feeling that history has in some way been redressed. For lots of reasons this appointment seems almost perfect.

Canny post.
I just wish Clough was here now to see MoN take our job.

Re: The Brian Clough we never had.
The sentiment is brilliant but the main point at which we could have had Clough as manager was before either Cowie or Murray was chairman.

Re: The Brian Clough we never had.
Seriously, I've wanted this guy for 15 years...it almost makes up for missing out on Cloughie. He's the next best thing.
I know the game is all £££ now and he does not have a magic wand, but fingers crossed. Had too many disappointments following SAFC (like 99.9%), and even thought Hughes may be a better choice, but this certainly has me feeling more excited than Hughes appointment would have done!
Haway etc...

He wouldn't have been (IMO of course)-MoN's record is vastly superior to Hughes'.
Hughes would have been a typical second rate SAFC appointment.

I put this on a post the other night, but if I could choose any manager, I'd plump for MON. I reckon he could well be the right manager for Sunderland.
If everything goes tits up, at least we gave him a go.
