Default Hard Drive / Windows 7 Permissions help

I am trying to wipe a hard drive but I am having trouble due to administrator rights.

I don't have the hard drive at hand at the moment but I'll give as much detail as I can remember.

The hard drive was removed from a broken laptop and is now in a SATA caddy thing.

I have copied everything on to my new laptop and now want to wipe everything so I can use it as a normal portable drive.

However, I am getting administrator permissions errors when trying to delete some folders (Users and I think Program Files and something else).

I think the way to resolve this is changing the administrator settings but my 'User' appears to be an administrator and I've tried to change the folder settings but have had little success.

    Any suggestions?

Also I will probably want to delete some of this off my new laptop as well because I never checked what I needed before I copied it

Or run an Explorer instance "as an administrator" and delete from there.

    But formatting is easier.

If you have all the data you need, then yes, format it.

Might as well DBAN it too.

There is about 56GB that I do want to keep on it but I could make a copy then "format the fucker" and copy it back on.

However, I will probably still have the same issue when trying to delete crap off the new laptop?

You can take ownership of the folders mate, you can do that on the other HDD too.

Right click, properties, security, advanced etc.

That's what I've been trying but I seem to be making a bit of an arse of it.

I'll need to have another look though.

I think I worked out the permissions but there was about 30GB of 'system volume information' when I looked at it on treesize so the fucker has been formatted

I think that's system restore data and possibly recycle bin. For future reference you can empty it by turning system restore off (or deleting restore points) and emptying the recycle bin.
