LOAF the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves.
Distance is no longer specified.
Nevertheless, in this case I don't think Yakubu even touched the ball, never mind moved it, therefore the ref should have blown and ordered a free kick to Wigan from the place where Pedersen touched the ball a second time. IMHO.

Refs just do not care about the finer points anymore. Such as corners which are generally placed outside of the quadrant.
