    Default Fast Bowling

Interesting article in the Sunday Times

    Current Best

    Steyn 238 @ 23.2
    Morkel 113 @ 30.2
    Johnson 187 @ 30.4
    Anderson 240 @ 30.6
    Khan 273 @ 31.8
    Kallis 269 @ 32
    Broad 132 @ 32
    Gul 125 @ 34.4
    Sharma 123 @ 34.5
    Martin 199 @ 34.7
    Edwards 141 @ 36.8

With the exception of Steyn, that is a woeful woeful list

Why is fast bowling so poor these days?

Extremely flat pitches is my main gripe. I don't think there are many pitches in world cricket where the quicks will be rubbing their hands in excitement of bowling on it

I don't think it helps that the last generation produced some of the all time greats of fast bowling (making today's crop look poor)

    Donald and Pollock
    Courtney and Curtley
    Wasim and Waqar
    McGrath

Jimmy's stats are misleading as they include the first few years of his career when he was very wayward. List also has to omit Mohammed Amir for obvious reasons.

Fidel Edwards should have way better stats than he has anarl, he's rapid. Tino Best was also lightening when I saw him play for Yorks last year.

did you see Steyn at Essex when he was younger, got dropped?

Apart from Australia, England and SA nations dont care about test cricket anymore

Can anyone remember the last time New Zealand played a test match?

I wouldnt even call many of them "Fast" other than say Steyn, Edwards... the rest are more or less fast medium seamers. Pure Fast bowling is dead.

Stephen Finn is a genuine fast bowler and Mitchell Johnson can be seriously quick as well.

    disagree.

Genuine fast bowlers are a yard or two quicker

Anyone remember when Nick Knight was batting on his stumps against Akhtar to give him that fraction extra time to see it

I asked James Foster who was the quickest he had faced in a county cricket 5 years ago or so...............Simon Jones

The reason why fast bowlers have vanished is because of the international schedule. When Ambrose and Donald were tearing in we would play two or three lest tests per year and 20/20 cricket hadnt surfaced

Increase in quantity of cricket has resulted in a decrease in the quality

I'd class an out and out quick bowler is someone who consistently bowls 90+mph. Finn is now doing this, and Johnson normally up there.

I agree about the schedule being to blame too. Fast bowling puts so much strain on the bowlers body they are all getting injured too often. Look at Lee, Tait, Flintoff, Akhtar and that Kiwi who's name has escaped me. They've all had their careers wrecked by injury.

    Agree with that.

Saying that, I think the point was more that the quality of fast medium/fast/seam bowlers in general is poor....not just the out and out quicks

only natural i suppose that as the numbers go up for batting that they would go down for bowling, or rather get worse.

but theres no doubting the flare has been lost, if you look at how many bowlers there are in the world that are great to watch there isnt now what there once was
